Funding Competitions Founders Should Know About
Beyond classic grants, explore competitions and pitch awards for your startup. Gain visibility, mentorship, and support through our curated European list.

There's a conversation I keep having with founders, and it goes something like this.
They've spent months deep in the maze of EU grants, Horizon Europe portals, eligibility matrices, budget templates. They've done the hard work of building something worth funding. And then someone mentions, almost in passing, "Did you enter that pitch competition last month?"
The answer is almost always no.
Not because they don't care about visibility, feedback, or prize money. But because keeping track of what's out there, when deadlines fall, what fits, where to even look, is a job in itself.
Below, we’ve compiled 12 of the most relevant funding competitions and pitch awards right now, across Germany and beyond. Some offer cash prizes. Some offer visibility, mentorship, and a global network that money genuinely can't buy.
Many are open right now, with deadlines coming up faster than you'd think.
Let's go through them one by one.
🏆 Heilbronn Slush'D Pitch Competition
Past Deadline: Sep 23, 2025 | Next Event: May 31 - Jun 2, 2026 | Heilbronn, DE
If you've been watching the European startup scene, you've heard of Slush: Finland's iconic event that redefined what a startup festival could be. Heilbronn Slush'D is Germany's only official Slush'D event, and it's become one of the most exciting pitch stages in the DACH ecosystem.
Last year's edition ran under the theme "ONE Driving Force" and the pitch competition reflected that ambition. Up to 50 startups got to present on stage in front of investors, corporates, and decision-makers. The prize categories included:
- ONE Hundred Award: the main prize, a €100,000 convertible loan investment for pre-seed B2B startups
- Co-Innovation Award: €25,000 to support a Proof of Concept with a corporate partner (new this year)
- ONE Driving Force Award: €10,000 cash for deep tech startups
- Female Founders Award: €5,000 cash for women-led startups
- Campus Founders Community Award — €5,000, voted live by the community on the day
We are watching closely the event website about what the next pitch competition would require from the startups. You need a Startup Ticket to be eligible, so don't sleep on this one.
Past attendees include founders who went on to raise significant rounds off the back of connections made here. If you're pre-seed, B2B, and building something that matters for Europe, this event was made for you.
🍳 Gastro Gründerpreis
Next Deadline: Dec 8, 2026 | Next Event: Mar 13, 2027 | Hamburg, DE | DACH
For innovators at the intersection of food, hospitality & technology
The Gastro Gründerpreis is a competition specifically designed for DACH startups operating in the food service, hospitality, and gastronomy space, an industry that is often underfunded despite being one of the most innovation-hungry in Europe.
If your startup touches anything from restaurant technology and food delivery innovation to supply chain digitization, sustainability in hospitality, or culinary tech, this award of €10,000 is worth a serious look. The competition brings together founders with industry decision-makers in ways that go beyond a cheque. Jury members are often the very operators and investors who become your first enterprise customers.
In an industry shaped by razor-thin margins and enormous potential for AI and digital tools, competitions like this one create the kind of early traction and credibility that's hard to manufacture any other way.
🌱 ThEx Award Thüringen
Next Deadline: Sep 9, 2026 | Next Event: Nov 17, 2026 | Erfurt, DE
Regional excellence, national visibility
The ThEx Award is Thuringia's flagship startup competition but don't let the regional branding mislead you about its reach. Supported by the Thüringer Aufbaubank and the regional innovation ecosystem, the ThEx Award has helped launch some of Central Germany's most promising startups.
The prize categories include:
- Founding: From €1,000 up to €6,000 for the top 10 finalists
- Getting Started: From €4,000 to €10,000 for the top 3 finalists
- Successing: From €4,000 to €10,000 for the top 3 finalists
- Initiator: €10,000 for the winner
The competition runs in multiple rounds: idea submission, concept development, and a final pitch. This staged process is one of the things we genuinely appreciate about it. Instead of a single high-pressure moment, founders get structured feedback at each phase, making the journey itself a development experience, not just a race to a trophy.
For founders building in Thuringia or with a strong connection to the Central German ecosystem, this is an obvious entry. For others, it's worth considering as a credibility-building exercise and an introduction to a regional network that punches well above its size.
💜 Female Pitch Night – Gründerinnen Summit 2025
Past Event: Oct 25, 2025 | Next Event: Jun 29, 2026 | Wuppertal, DE
The Female Pitch Night at the Gründerinnen Summit was one of those events that does something rare: It creates genuine community alongside competition. Organized in the context of the Wuppertal Entrepreneurship Summit, the event centers women-led startups and gives them a stage that's specifically designed for visibility rather than performance anxiety.
This year’s edition is focusing on the succession of a company rather than on startups. We are still watching closely for further startup-oriented formats by the renowned organization.
The prizes of up to €2,500 are meaningful at an early stage. But what I'd argue is equally valuable is the network of mentors, investors, and fellow female founders it connects you to.
🌍 WSA Young Innovators Award
Past Deadline: Oct 31, 2025 | Next Event: May 20-22, 2026 | Vienna, AT
The World Summit Awards is one of the most genuinely global recognition systems, spanning 182 countries and anchored in the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The Young Innovators category is an open call for digital solutions created by people under 26 who are driving positive change.
This isn't a cash prize competition. The winner doesn't walk away with a cheque.
What they do walk away with is something harder to quantify: global visibility, integration into a cross-sectoral network of changemakers, and the kind of international credibility that opens doors across continents.
The award covers eight categories including Environment & Green Energy, Health & Wellbeing, Education, and more. If you're under 26 and building something with genuine social impact, this is one of the most meaningful endorsements you can earn. The application rounds are repeated on a regular basis in autumn.
⚡ Science4Life Energy Award
Prize pool: €60,000+ across phases | For energy sector startups
Science4Life has been Germany's most respected business plan competition for life sciences, chemistry, and energy since 1998. In 2025, they reached a record 94 submissions, a testament to the competition's enduring reputation and the innovation happening in these sectors.
The Energy Award runs parallel to the Venture Cup, specifically for startups in the energy sector: renewables, grid technology, storage, energy efficiency, urban energy systems. The competition is structured across three phases: idea sketch, concept, and business plan, with prize money and expert coaching available at every stage. Total prize money across all tracks exceeds €60,000, and every submission receives detailed written feedback from industry experts.
One thing I particularly value about Science4Life is the Academy Days. It involves intensive workshops with coaches, investors, and sector specialists that happen alongside the competition rounds. Even teams that don't win describe these sessions as transformative. The new competition round began in late 2025 with the last deadline on April 13, 2026.
If energy is your space, this is a must-enter in autumn 2026.
🛡️ CyberChampions Award
Past Event: Nov 5, 2025 | Prize pool: €17,500 across 3 categories | Karlsruhe, DE
The CyberChampions Award is one of Germany's most targeted regional recognition programs for startups operating at the intersection of cybersecurity, digital resilience, and data protection.
The award recognizes companies that are actively strengthening Germany's and Europe's digital defenses:
- security infrastructure
- compliance tooling
- threat intelligence
- privacy-preserving technology
📡 MABB Förderpreis Medienkompetenz stärkt Brandenburg
Past Event: Nov 12, 2025 | Prize pool: €20,000 | Berlin-Brandenburg, DE
The Medienanstalt Berlin-Brandenburg (MABB) runs this award to recognize regional projects and initiatives that strengthen media literacy and digital competency.
This is a less traditional startup prize and more of a recognition program for founders and initiatives making digital participation more accessible, inclusive, and empowering.
If your startup operates at the intersection of AI explainability, digital education, accessible technology design, or civic media, this award is more relevant than its name might suggest.
There's also a community dimension to this prize that matters. Being recognized within your regional ecosystem builds the kind of trust that national and international awards don't always capture.
♻️ Green Alley Award
Past Event: 2024 | Prize: €25,000 | Berlin, DE | Europe
The Green Alley Award was Europe's first startup prize dedicated specifically to the circular economy, established in 2014 by Landbell Group. Over ten years, it received nearly 2,000 applications from 30+ countries and channelled over €1.2 million in funding into circular economy innovators.
Note: The 2024 edition was the final one in its current format. The team has announced a pause on the competition while they continue to support the ecosystem through other means.
I'm including it here because it's worth watching: Organizations like Landbell often return with evolved formats, and the alumni community around this award is one of the strongest in European CleanTech.
If you're building in the circularity field, recycling, waste prevention, or digital sustainability tools, bookmark the website, follow the team, and be ready to move when the next chapter opens.
🚀 Durchstarter-Preis
Past Deadline: May 11, 2025 | Prize pool: ~€100,000 in total prizes | Niedersachsen, DE
DurchSTARTer-Preis is a state-wide initiative of the Land Lower Saxony that recognises outstanding startups across three categories:
1. Newcomer/Scale-up
2. Science Spin-off
3. Social Innovation

- 1st place receives €10,000
- 2nd place €5,000
- 3rd place €3,000
The competition requires a current company seat or operating site in Niedersachsen, and startups may only enter once per category.
If your startup is based in Lower Saxony and is younger than five years, this is one of the most visible stages the regional ecosystem offers – hopefully it’s active soon again.
📦 OUT OF THE BOX.NRW
Past Deadline: Feb 02, 2026 | Next Event: Jun 18, 2026 | Prize pool: €50,000
Initiated by the NRW Ministry of Economic Affairs and sponsored by NRW.BANK, OUT OF THE BOX.NRW is one of the highest-prize active startup competitions in Germany and one of the few that explicitly focuses on digital business models.
The competition is open to startups founded between 2023 and 2025 with a seat in North Rhine-Westphalia. From over 100 applications, VC investors select the Top 26 startups, who then compete through an online public vote and expert jury assessment.
The top 10 pitch live at the internationally known Hinterland of Things Conference in Bielefeld, where the final three winners are selected:
- 1st place receives €25,000
- 2nd place €15,000
- 3rd place €10,000
What makes OOTB.NRW stand out is the pipeline it creates: Shortlisted startups gain visibility with a curated network of investors, corporate decision-makers, and B2B buyers at one of Germany's most respected B2B tech conferences.
If your startup is digital-first, NRW-based, registered in the past 3 years, and ready for investor exposure, this is your stage.
🤖 HR Tech Jungle 2025 by Allygatr
Past Event: Oct 14, 2025 | Berlin, DE
This is a niche competition, and that’s a huge plus. Allygatr's HR Tech Jungle is a pitch and networking event designed specifically for startups operating at the intersection of human resources, workforce technology, and the future of work.
In a crowded pitch circuit, niche events are where real conversations happen. The HR tech space is undergoing dramatic transformation: skills-based hiring, AI-assisted performance management, workforce planning tools, and platforms addressing burnout and inclusion. If your product touches how organizations find, develop, or retain people, this is your audience.
🎬 Der Popcorn Pitch, Havel Valley Community
Past Deadline: Sep 30, 2025 | Past Event: Nov 20, 2025 | Brandenburg an der Havel, DE
The most memorable pitch experiences are sometimes in the most unexpected places: Pitching inside a cinema, with all the theatrical drama that implies. It's part startup competition, part community gathering, part love letter to the regional founder scene.
If you're in or near the Berlin-Brandenburg region and want a pitch experience that feels genuinely different, and an audience that's warm, curious, and community-minded rather than transactional, this one is worth the trip.
🎙️ Radio Gong 100.000 Euro-Idee
Last Deadline: Apr 13, 2026 | Prize: €100,000 budget | Event: Jul 22., 2026 | Munich, DE
This one stands apart from every other competition on this list because the prize isn't cash. It's reach.
Radio Gong awards a €100,000 media budget to a Munich-area startup, decided by live public listener voting. Each participating startup gets featured in detail across Radio Gong's programming, social channels, and online platform. The finalist with the most votes wins a comprehensive radio and online campaign, plus the opportunity to present on stage at the Munich Startup Festival.
If your product needs consumer awareness rather than investor access, this is a different kind of value from most competitions on this list. It’s perfect for B2C ventures.
Regardless of whether you win, the broadcast exposure alone puts your brand in front of an audience that most pitching circuits don't reach. This is a competition where having a clear, compelling story for a general audience is the actual skill being tested. Consider it a stress test for how well you can explain what you do to someone who's never heard of your sector.
🌍 Generation-D Social Entrepreneurship Wettbewerb
Last Deadline: Mar 22, 2026 | Prize pool: €14,000+ | Germany-wide
Generation-D is Germany's national social entrepreneurship competition, now in its 17th year, and one of the few competitions that explicitly invites founders to apply before their idea is fully formed.
The competition is open to students and young professionals who want to tackle a genuine social, ecological, or societal problem. Applications are reviewed in two rounds, with shortlisted teams receiving structured feedback, pitch coaching, and access to a network of mentors and investors from partners including Allianz, the Süddeutsche Zeitung, and UnternehmerTUM.
The top 6 finalists pitch at a live final event, with prizes totalling over €14,000 awarded as project-linked funding.
What makes Generation-D distinctive is the process itself. Unlike competitions where you show up with a polished deck, Generation-D is explicitly designed to help you build and sharpen your concept during the competition rounds.
If your idea addresses one of the UN's 17 SDGs and you're willing to iterate in public, this is one of the best structured development experiences the German startup scene offers to early-stage founders.
🏦 Businessplan-Wettbewerb Berlin-Brandenburg (BPW)
Next Deadline: May 19, 2026 | Overall prize pool: €50,000+ | Berlin & Brandenburg, DE
BPW is one of Germany's largest regional founding initiatives. It runs annually across three phases, each with its own submission deadline and prize money. What makes it unusual is the scope of what's included beyond the competition itself: free seminars, workshops, and online programmes, individual feedback from a jury of over 350 expert advisors; and an active network of investors, mentors, and fellow founders across the region. All of this is free for all registered participants, not just the winners.
The BPW accepts both full business plans and Business Model Canvas submissions, meaning you can participate at almost any stage of development.
🏅 KfW Award Gründen
Deadline: Jul 1, 2026 | Prize pool: €35,000 | Ceremony: Nov 4, 2026 | Berlin
Since 1998, the KfW Award Gründen has been one of Germany's most recognised national honours for young companies, and one of the few competitions where the application process is deliberately low-barrier.
The 2026 edition is open to startups and young companies founded in 2021 or later, with a German headquarters. Applications are fully online and don't require a polished business plan. KfW explicitly asks for authentic insight into your entrepreneurial story rather than a perfect financial model. The jury evaluates innovation, creativity, social responsibility, sustainability, and economic impact.
The prize structure works at two levels: one winner per federal state (€1,000 each), followed by a national Bundessieg (€9,000) and a public Publikumspreis decided by online voting (€5,000).
The award ceremony takes place on November 4, 2026 in Berlin, broadcast by n-tv, with all winners receiving professional PR support. The combination of national media coverage and state-level recognition makes this one of the highest-visibility competitions relative to the effort required to apply.
If you're a German-based startup that has been operating since 2021 and can tell a compelling story about the impact you've created — this deadline is worth marking in your calendar now.
🎓 BayStartUP Bayerische Businessplan Wettbewerbe
Next Deadline: Jun 9, 2026 | Prize pool: €85,000 | Bavaria, DE
For Bavarian founders and tech startups looking to build genuine traction in one of Germany's strongest startup ecosystems, this is the right spot.
The competition runs across four regional tracks,
- Munich
- Nordbayern
- Ideenreich
- Schwaben
and three phases, with cross-entry possible at any stage.
1. Phase 1 focuses on the business idea and customer value
2. Phase 2 on business model, marketing, and SWOT
3. Phase 3 on team, roadmap, and financial planning
Total prize money across all tracks reaches €85,000, with all participants receiving detailed written jury feedback in every phase.
The investor pipeline at BayStartUp is incredible: The network facilitates over €50 million in early-stage investment annually, and past participants describe the jury feedback sessions as among the most practically useful they've received.
If you're raising your first round and want structured pressure to develop your business model, this competition is designed for exactly that.
🏅 Innovationspreis Baden-Württemberg – Dr.-Rudolf-Eberle-Preis
Deadline: May 31, 2026 | Prize: €50,000 + €7,500 | Baden-Württemberg, DE | Award ceremony: Nov 25, 2026
The Innovationspreis has been recognising outstanding technological innovation since 1985.
The prize is awarded to SMEs based in Baden-Württemberg for the development or application of modern technologies in new products, processes, or technological services. Additionally, the Mittelständische Beteiligungsgesellschaft (MBG) awards a separate Sonderpreis of €7,500 specifically for a young company. The award ceremony takes place on November 25, 2026.
Apart from the money, such a prize in its 42nd edition has an alumni network, a media footprint, and a credibility signal that newer awards simply can't replicate.
If your startup or SME is building an innovative product, process, or tech service in Baden-Württemberg, the May 31 deadline is one to mark now.
💡 HHU Ideenwettbewerb – CEDUS
Next deadline: approx. May 31, 2026 | Next Event: Jul 16, 2026 | Düsseldorf, DE
The HHU Ideenwettbewerb, organised by the Center for Entrepreneurship Düsseldorf (CEDUS) at Heinrich Heine Universität offers an awarded total prize money of €3,800, with an additional sustainability special prize from the Heine-Center for Sustainable Development (HCSD).
Prize money is structured as follows across each category:
- 1st place receives €1,000
- 2nd place €600
- 3rd place €300
The HCSD Sonderpreis for the most sustainable idea adds a further €250.
Funds are earmarked specifically for founding and project-related expenses, excluding general operating costs.
The jury evaluates ideas on feasibility, degree of innovation, and success potential, with all jury members bound by a confidentiality agreement.
Finalists also receive a full day of pitch training and one-to-one coaching sessions before the award ceremony, where the public votes live for an additional Publikumspreis.
One important note on eligibility: at least one team member must be affiliated with HHU or UKD at the time of submission, and the idea must not yet be commercially exploited.
If you're affiliated with HHU and sitting on an idea you haven't yet acted on, the Ideenwettbewerb is designed precisely for that moment.
🌟 Zukunftspreis Brandenburg
Deadline: May 31, 2026 | Event: Nov 20, 2026 | Brandenburg, DE
The Zukunftspreis Brandenburg recognises outstanding SME achievement across a wide range of criteria: innovative products and processes, responsible leadership, strong apprenticeship programmes, sustainable business practices, international growth, and exemplary succession solutions.
The prize is notably broad in scope. There's no single sector filter, and no minimum size requirement. What the jury is looking for are businesses that make a compelling case for their contribution to Brandenburg's future: creative, active, and innovative companies that invest in what comes next, even in difficult times.
Winners receive not just a trophy and certificate, but a professionally produced image film, extensive media coverage across the state, and the right to carry the "Gewinner des Zukunftspreises Brandenburg" label, a credibility signal that resonates strongly within the regional ecosystem and with local enterprise clients, partners, and public institutions. The prize is backed by a broad coalition including all six Brandenburg chambers of commerce, the Investitionsbank des Landes Brandenburg (ILB), Deutsche Bank, and the regional employment agencies, which speaks to its reach and institutional weight.
This is one of the most visible regional recognitions available.
🌿 KUER.NRW Businessplan Wettbewerb
Next Deadline: Jul 15, 2026 | Prize pool: €15,000 | North Rhine-Westphalia, DE
Running annually since 2014, KUER.NRW is a sector-specific startup competition focused exclusively on the future industries of Klima, Umwelt, Energieeffizienz und Ressourcenschonung. It’s for NRW-based founders and startups up to two years old.
What sets it apart is the structure around the prize. Over five months, participants develop their business plan in two phases, guided by a personal mentor and sector specialists, with six dedicated workshops and written expert feedback at each phase. The top ten teams receive pitch training and professional image films; the top three share prize money of €7,000, €5,000, and €3,000 respectively.
If your startup is building in green tech, circular economy, renewables, or environmental services, and you're based in NRW, this is one of the most practically useful competitions on this list.
You will come out the other side with a fundable business plan and a warm introduction to the KUER investor network.

All participants receive written feedback from specialist reviewers.
The prize pool looks modest, but the access it unlocks, particularly the Business Angel presentation opportunities and the sector-specific network, makes this worth considering for any early-stage founder building at the intersection of biology, agriculture, and sustainability.
A niche room, but exactly the right one if bioeconomy is your space.

2. Weltmarktführer & Hidden Champion, now extended to include mid-sized companies ranking among the top 3 in their global niche
3. Arbeitgeber des Jahres, for employers demonstrating exceptional creativity in talent development and job creation
There is no cash prize — the value is visibility, institutional endorsement from the Hessian Ministry of Economic Affairs, and a platform in front of the state's most influential business decision-makers.
For Hessen-based startups with a market-ready innovation and a compelling story, the Innovation category is the natural entry point.
🚀 Pioniergeist – Ihr Konzept, unser Gründerpreis
Deadline: Jun 30, 2026 | Prize pool: €30,000 + €5,000 | Rheinland-Pfalz, DE

Eligible founders are those who became self-employed or took over a company between 2021 and 2025, or who will found their company by June 30, 2026.
Two things make this worth flagging beyond the prize money: First, the SWR media partnership brings genuine broadcast visibility. Second, the Business Angels Sonderpreis opens a direct channel to early-stage investors in the region.

Two winning teams each receive €5,000 in prize money plus individual coaching measures.
This is a niche award on AgeTech, covering mobility, communication, safety, health, and entertainment for older adults, representing a vast and growing market that most startup competitions treat as a footnote.

Every participant receives individual expert feedback on their submitted business plan, regardless of outcome, making the competition worth entering even without placing.
The format is deliberately lean: the application takes around 15 minutes and requires a pitch deck but no video, after which a jury of experienced practitioners selects seven finalists who receive pitch training before competing at the live finale. The final event is framed as dealflow live, offering direct access to investors, networking with the Hamburg startup ecosystem, and genuine visibility beyond the competition itself.
If your startup is Hamburg-based and early-stage, this is one of the most efficient competitions you can enter relative to the effort involved.

The three best concepts receive cash prizes and five hours of free legal first consultation from a specialist law firm, a genuinely practical award for early-stage founders navigating IP and company formation questions. Every participant receives individual written jury feedback, regardless of placement.
The award ceremony takes place on July 16, 2026, in front of decision-makers from business, research, politics, and the financial sector. The application is free and requires only a maximum five-page idea sketch, plus a registration form, which is a very low-barrier entry for what it returns.
🏆 Hessischer Gründerpreis
Deadline: May 10, 2026 | Ceremony: Nov 6, 2026, Offenbach am Main | Hessen, DE
The Hessischer Gründerpreis recognises startups, founders, and successors based in Hessen who have been active for no more than five years, across four categories:
1. Innovative Geschäftsidee
2. Zukunftsfähige Nachfolge
3. Gesellschaftliche Wirkung
4. Gründung aus der Hochschule
Ready-to-launch university projects that are market-ready but not yet formally founded are also eligible, an unusually inclusive eligibility criterion that sets it apart from most prizes.
The prize carries no cash endowment. Instead, all 48 semi-finalists receive expert training and high-profile media coverage. The top 12 finalists each receive a professionally produced company video. The winners gain access to premium networking contacts, potential listing opportunities with major German retailers, and can be nominated for the Deutscher Gründerpreis.
So, what now?
Here's the truth about pitch competitions that nobody tells you early enough.
They are not primarily about winning. They are about compressing months of positioning work into a few high-quality public moments. Every time you pitch, you sharpen your story. Every jury question reveals an assumption you didn't know you were making. Every conversation in the hallway afterward is a potential partnership, customer, or co-founder.
The founders who consistently put themselves in the room, even when they don't win, even when the format doesn't perfectly fit, are the ones who, twelve months later, look back and trace their first real traction to one of those rooms.
My top three takeaways from watching hundreds of founders navigate this landscape:
1. Apply before you feel ready. The preparation is the reward. You will never feel 100% ready, and the deadline doesn't care.
2. Match the competition to your current stage, not your future ambition. A pre-seed founder entering a scale-up competition will lose but a pre-seed founder entering a community pitch like Popcorn Pitch might walk away with their first paying customer.
3. Every competition is a forcing function. A pitch deck, a one-pager, a two-minute video submission, these are artefacts you need to build anyway. Use the deadline as your accountability structure.
At GrantHive, we're building the platform that makes navigating funding, grants, competitions, expert guidance, less of a funding jungle and more of a clear pathway.
If you're a founder trying to figure out where public funding fits into your strategy, we'd love to connect.
And if you know of a competition that should be on this list, share it with us to spread the word.
